Gas Land Petroleum proposes changes in Hughsonville
Opened for business less than six months, Gas Land Petroleum has submitted an application to the Town of Wappinger Planning Board requesting to make site plan changes at their Route 9D site in Hughsonville.
In a letter from LaBella to the town planning board members - the proposed changes are:
extending the hours of operation by one hour until 12:00am midnight (the previously approved hours of operation were 5:00am-11:00pm),
adding an air pump,
adding an approximately 2’x6’ propane tank exchange cabinet1 (for customer drop-
off/pick up) with an associated 4’x6’ concrete pad as base, and
relocating one designated parking space (for the apartment)
The details can be found here: https://townofwappingerny.gov/planning-board-meetings-minutes/
See the details for the September 2, 2026 Planning Board agenda. There is a lot of verbiage about how this is consistent with the Town's comprehensive plan and will have no negative effects.
Please remember that this Gas Station was built after a Town Board, under the guidance of former Supervisor Thurston, under the guise of a "variety of changes" changed the Zoning Code, removing the previous requirement that Gasoline Filling Stations could not be built within 1500 feet of residences, places of worship etc. This change also enabled apartments to be built on the same property as a Gas Station. The public, especially those living in Hughsonville, protested this project - and the Article 78 Lawsuit against the Town of Wappinger is still in the courts, currently awaiting a decision from the New York Supreme Court - Appellate Division - because of the manner in which the Zoning Board and Planning Board managed this case.
Next Steps -- unless there are changes to the September 2 Planning Board Agenda, Gas Land's representatives will be presenting their request to the Planning Board, where members of the Planning Board and Town of Wappinger Professionals will ask questions. Unless additional work/material needs to be provided - they will also vote on setting a Public Hearing date. During that Public Hearing, members of the public will be able to make short statements about any concerns they may have about this site plan amendment request. Please plan to attend both the September 2 meeting (7:00 PM Town Hall) to better understand the details of the proposed project and to attend the subsequent Public Hearing.
Please remember that both the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board members, are made of up of individuals who are asked to represent the interests of the residents of the town.
