Premature Fireworks at Town Board Meeting

CarniFall -- scheduled for this weekend... with real Fireworks planned... had a bit of a preview at the September 28th Town Board Meeting when the Ward 1 Council Member decided to poke at the Town Clerk and verbal Fireworks ensued. The issue revolved around how meeting materials get delivered to the Town Board Members ahead of the meetings -- which seems to be a completely ridiculous discussion given that we are well into the Twenty First Centurty and the delivery of documents electronically is a well accepted practice. And oh by the way, ignoring the fact that the first ward council member, like all other council members, have keys to the town hall to stop by and pick up any information/documents/hardcopy mail at any time. He waited until 6:59 PM to ask where the meeting materials were (if they were that important to him, a phone call the week before would have worked) and apparently he had not seen the emails to the board members explaining that because of a concern about the mileage costs reimbursements not covering the full costs of special delivery) he decided to then bring the matter up AGAIN, while the camera was rolling... "to get it on the record". What a great use of the public's time and attention. The agent provocateur role is not a good look.... especially over mundane matters that can easily be resolved.

4 Public Hearings were held -- with no members of the public speaking - and later in the meeting, the 4 related resolutions were approved by the board.

  • Resolution to amend the town code to prohibit illict massage businesses.

  • Resolution to provide property tax exemption for surviving spouses of police officers killed in the line of duty.

  • Resolution to provide property tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled military veterans

  • Resolution to amend the townn code with Hamlet Mixed Use Zoning District updates.

Consent agenda - all approved

  • Established a performance bond for Mid-Hudson Subaru

  • Re-appointed a member to the Board of Assessment

  • Approved a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Town and the Teamsters Local 445

Resolutions in addition to the 4 resolutions related to the public hearings, the board also approved:

  • a local law enabling the Town to establish Parking Permit Requirements for Designated Town-Owned Properties.

The Board then went into an hour long executive session where they interviewed 3 candidates for an open position on the Board of Assessment - returned and voted one of the candidates.

Reminder - Grinell Library budget vote is scheduled for October 6 -- absentee ballots are available if you cannot make the October 6th vote at the library.
